HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BE COMING IN?
This is a question that really depends on the look!
Lived in, more rooted, dimensional blondes generally come in every 3-6 months for lightening maintenance, where our guests that prefer their blonde up to the scalp, or are more solid blonde, generally come back within 4-6 weeks to have their lightening retouched.
We also offer mini lightening appointments for an express option to add some brightness around the face + hairline, or even retouch a few pieces around the natural part.
With all of our blondes, we do also recommend a Clear or Color Gloss appointment around 8-10 weeks to refresh + enhance shine, and/or neutralize any unwanted tones in between lightening appointments.
We HIGHLY recommend Chelating treatments 1-2x's a year to keep your blonde bright and to remove as much unwanted brassy as possible. These treatments go beneath the cuticle of the hair into the cortex and clean out the minerals/metals and free radicals and build up that a regular clarifying shampoo did not remove. These are done in the salon, before your lightening/color service or as a separate service in salon. These will remove any gloss that may be left on the hair (it will not remove permanent color) and should be booked with a gloss and blow dry following the treatment.
At Home Care
At home care is crucial to maintaining your look in between lightening appointments!
We always recommend using professional salon quality products.
Shower head filters are also a necessity in maintaining the optimal health and color of your hair. We love the Berkey Shower head /filter because they last up to 6-12 months before needing replacement, their price efficiency ($99) and they work AMAZING! We carry them in stock in salon.
Clarifying the hair 1x per week is recommended to remove product + oil buildup, as well as to remove any minerals in the hair. These factors can all effect the tone of the hair after blonding, and may cause unwanted brassiness and brittleness.
We do love a good purple shampoo, but it's important not to overuse these purple toned products! Overuse can actually over-deposit the tone into the hair, which can result in it looking more dull than before! Kevin Murphy's Blonde. Angel regime is our fav, but in moderation!
Consider how often you heat style.
Is it often? Especially using more than one hot tool? High temps on hot tools without the use of heat protectant is a leading cause of color fade on blonde clients. Turn back the heat- 300 degrees with 2-3 passes max should do it!
We also recommend a heat protectant product to create a barrier on the hair. Our go to is Kevin Murphy's Young. Again serum, which protects against heat, UVA/UVB, and other environmental stressors while nourishing the hair from the inside out! Another top pick- Eleven Australia's Miracle Hair Treatment Spray- with 11 benefits, heat protection is just one of the many perks of this intensive spray!
Making sure to keep your hot tools clean is another factor that can cause extreme discoloration. You should clean your tools monthly at minimum. Wait until they are cool and take a clean cloth or cotton swab with rubbing alcohol to remove product build up. Then wipe clean with damp cloth that has warm soapy water to remove leftover alcohol. Wipe once more with a damp cloth and allow to dry before use.
Do you have hard water or well water?
New England has some of the hardest water in the U.S.
Have you ever considered your water being the cause to your blonde to feel brassy, or dull? It can be a battle, especially if your house is on a well system, but the use of a shower filter like the Berkey, and a clarifying shampoo can help to combat these effects on your blonde!
We offer filters, and an in salon clarifying/chelating treatments that specifically target hard water buildup to save your blonde and your investment.
